Redrawn from the original maps with emendations, based on A. Raistrick and A.J. Wells (see references below) and by J.H. Hull (NW of Reeth), D.B. Smith (Permo-Triassic) and J.R. Earp (mineral veins); compiled by D.A.C. Mills, published as 1:63 360 scale provisional maps 41 (Solid) and 41 (Drift) in 1970. Redrawn at 1:50 000 scale based on the 1970 provisional map and incorporating mapping in the east of the district by J.R. Davies, D.V. Frost, J.G.O. Smart and A.J. Wadge (see sources of compilation material diagram) and information given in the references below. Information about the deep geology for the cross-section from G. Kirby and J.D. Cornwell. Compiled by A.H. Cooper with minor emendations to the Carboniferous in the east of the district and extensive revision of the Permian and Triassic based on additional borehole information. T.J.
