In the east of the district, the Hanwood Coalfield and Permo-Triassic rocks were resurveyed at the 1:10 560 scale by D.A. Wray and C.B. Wedd in 1915-1928.In the south of the district the Shelve Ordovician Inlier was resurveyed at the 1:1 0 000 scale by R.L. Langford and B.D.T. Lynas in 1982-84 and a small area to the west by R. Cave in 1988. The resurvey of the Shelve Ordovician Inlier was funded by the former Department of Industry. Remaining parts of the district and the superficial deposits of the northern part of the Shelve Ordovician Inlier were rapidly resurveyed at the 1:10 000 scale by R. Cave (University of Wales, Aberystwth) in 1998-2002 as a commissioned research project under the British Geological Survey University Collaboration Scheme. Biostratigraphy by R. Cave, S.G. Molyneux and M. Williams. Compiled by R. Cave and R.A. Waters. P.J. Strange, Regional Geologist.",
